It was established in 1872–4 by the German scientist Anton Dohrn to study marine environments. The building, which was designed by Adolf von Hildebrandt, was enlarged and remodelled in 1888, 1904 and again in 1957. It contains research labs, a small exhibition and the oldest aquarium in Europe, with specimens from the Bay of Naples.

One of the most famous streets in Naples, Santa Lucia exemplifies the city’s striking contrasts. Luxury hotels that were built for the elite in the 19th century and imposing buildings for the regional government rub shoulders with the Pallonetto di Santa Lucia slum area where the poor eke out a living.

No less astounding is Artemisia Gentileschi’s painting of C A P O D I M O N T E Judith and Holofernes, a subject she made her own. The artist, who favoured rather violent themes, was an exceptionally gifted painter and remarkably independent for a woman of her times. Portrait of Ferdinand IV as a Youth was painted by the German artist Anton Raphael Mengs in 1760; the young king, whose luxurious clothes are rendered in great detail, was nine at the time. In addition, there are some fine landscapes by Ferdinand IV’s court painter, Jakob-Philipp Hackert.
